Dec 15: Theses Award 2009: Award Ceremony

San Donato Milanese, December 15 2009

The winners of the 2009 Gustavo Sclocchi Awards were honoured at a special ceremony last December 15th in San Donato Milanese, Italy. The competition being held for the 17th time is for the best theses in geosciences and petroleum engineering by university and diploma graduates, as well as PhDs, at Italian universities or by Italian students abroad. The theses have to cover a subject related to geology, geophysics, formation evaluation, well drilling and completion, reservoir engineering, production and transport, HSE, or energy economics.

This contest is a joint initiative of EAGE, SPE Italian Section and Assomineraria, which is the Italian Petroleum and Mining Industry Association, to encourage young students specializing in petroleum engineering and geosciences. The awards started in 1993 and since 2001 they have been associated with the name of Gustavo Sclocchi, the eni manager, who was the main promoter of the event and who died unexpectedly in Moscow in 2001. Over the last 16 years some 389 theses have been submitted of which 98 have won awards.

Four theses were awarded and six received an honourable mention. The officers of the three associations – Maurizio Rampoldi (SPE Italian Section), Davide Calcagni (EAGE), and Giancarlo Dossena (Assomineraria) - warmly greeted the winners and presented them with a cash prize of 2400 euro each. The recipients of the honourable mentions had a free membership for either SPE or EAGE for 2010.
