Geosciences are the core of the energy transition. It is within geological formations that high value oil and gas, a critical enabler, has formed, is explored for, and exploited. It is also within geological formations that wind turbines are founded, carbon dioxide will be stored, and other energy sources and critical minerals are found. Industry geoscientists will be highly relevant in the transition as only industry has the industrial capacity, technical and commercial human resources, financial capability, and project execution skills to facilitate the energy transition.

The Pandemic years were challenging to keep active the SEG UniPG Students chapter and keep attracted to new coming students. It is important to keep active the chapter and evolve new students because the SEG provides an excellent platform to build a network and skillsets on both a professional and interpersonal level, which are critical for an early career scientist.

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Student Chapter (SC) at the University of Pisa (UNIPI) was founded in 2009 with the support of the Emeritus Professor Alfredo Mazzotti, President of the master’s degree course in Exploration and Applied Geophysics at UNIPI, at the time.

AAPG’s Imperial Barrel Award Program (IBA) is an annual prospective basin evaluation competition for geoscience graduate students from universities around the world. University teams compete to win scholarship funds for their geoscience department and the international recognition that comes from competing or winning in the competition. The program is rigorous and contributes to AAPG’s mission of promoting petroleum geoscience training and advancing the careers of geoscience students. The judges will select the winning team based on the technical quality, clarity and originality of presentation.
