Regional Italian Challenge Bowl 2007
Rome, November 12 2007
Like gladiators fighting against wild lions in the Coliseum, bold young Students dared challenging the hazards of geosciences. Not too far from the historical arena, the First Italian Challenge Bowl took place, during the Annual Meeting of the Italian EAGE-SEG Section in Rome. Geophysics and geology Master and PhD Students from Turin, Rome, Naples and Benevento participated to a competition in equilibrium up to the very last question.
At the end the winners were Laura Galluccio and Lorenzo Cascone from the University of Naples “Federico II”, who will participate to the International Challenge Bowl at the next Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, thanks to the sponsorship of SEG and the Italian EAGE-SEG Section.
The Rome competition was the first one of the Challenge Bowl not only in Italy, but also in Europe. All the questions were proposed in English, not only to be better prepared for the Big Final in the States, but also because the competition was (and will be) open to Students from other European countries. Eni will be one of the sponsors for the second edition, in a year.
The Challenge Bowl attracted not only a number of students, but also several professors and research associates, who enjoyed the show and were committed to stimulate their own students to participate even more numerous in the future. The Master of Ceremony (Aldo Vesnaver) and the Foreman of the Jury (Eugenio Loinger) enjoyed organizing and being part of the great fun. Fundamental help for software, hardware and spirit is acknowledged to the “guru” of the International Challenge Bowl, i.e., Peter Duncan.
Promoting geosciences among Students is one of the many activities of the Italian EAGE-SEG Section, and the Challenge Bowl is just a new enjoyable one. Other initiaves are coming.
