SEG GEOPHYSICS FIELD CAMP IN SOUTHERN ITALY 2021:  “ACTIVE FAULTS”

FIELD CAMP OUTLINE: the camp will be held in the so-called Mefite d’Ansanto (Rocca San Felice, AV). This site represents a premier target for high-resolution geophysical investigation, located in the Campanian-Lucanian Apennines at the northern termination of one of the faults ruptured during the 1980, M6.9, Irpinia earthquake.
The site falls inside the area of the strongest heat flow of the southern Apennines extensional belt and is one of the largest sites of natural emission of low temperature CO2 rich gases, from a non‐volcanic environments.
The aim of the field camp is therefore double: training activities on geophysical data acquisitions; detection of geological features of the site through different geophysical measurements.
Experienced professors and skilled researchers will open the camp through lectures in order to introduce geological, and geophysical information about the investigating target; later, they will lead participants during a field trip to provide an exhaustive overview of the area.
A high-resolution seismic survey, a 3D electrical resistivity survey, and gravimetric survey will be provided. Detecting and imaging active fault zones in the degassing area could provide key information to improve the understanding of the physical mechanisms underlying the degassing site and its connections with the deep fluid-saturated carbonate reservoir.
The surveys will be performed with top ranked instruments, as example the seismic source “Minivib”. In this way, the seismic survey will represent a great experience for participants which will take part in unconventional surveys.
The last days will be dedicated to data processing and interpretation of the collected data.
